i'm dreaming of a hot christmas!

not really, but that's what we had! it was 80 degrees on christmas day and really sticky. but i had a great time with my lonely hearts club band. it was me, jessica, scott, jessica's friend judy from portland, or, and another coworker hunt. it was so hot that scott and hunt moved the table outside and we dined al fresco!

no, judy is not praying...

but we had a lovely spread of chicken wings, cioppino (an italian seafood stew traditionally served for xmas), acorn squash lasagna, roasted asparagus, and salad. then for dessert we had raspberry cupcakes with chocolate frosting, bananas foster bread pudding, spice cookies, silk nog, and mulled wine. it was a good day. :)

making cookies with new friends

on friday night after work, i invited some new friends over to make holiday cookies. lee and i bake a lot--holiday or not--and i've really missed having the smell of fresh bread, cookies, scones, biscuits, you name it, filling up my house. there were four of us: my old stand-by of jessica, and then also jessica's orientation friend kelly who i met a week and a half ago, and then another coworker mary.

here's jessica taking her peanut butter kiss cookies off a warm sheet.

and here's kelly and mary not quite realizing that i'm taking a picture of them. mary, on the right, is INCREDIBLY shy and jessica and i have been trying to think of a way to get her to hang out for a while because she's really cool. so she kept trying to run from the camera--but here she is! :)

jessica's kiss cookies were made with peanut butter and co.'s white chocolate peanut butter and dark chocolate kisses--way better than your average cookie with low-quality pb! kelly made chocolate waffle cookies, mary made mrs. field's chocolate chip cookies, and i made eggnog icebox cookies. a fun and tasty evening!

i turned on my air conditioner today!

um, it was 81 yesterday and 83 today. my house has no insulation, so when i came home it was almost 83 in my house as well. yuck! i was holding out--it's been in the mid- to high-70s since the middle of last week, but i couldn't take it anymore! i just cooled the place down and then turned the ac off. i rationalized it that way...

can't wait to see snow again :)

whew!

well, lee started a new job on monday. what a relief! it's at smma and he'll be working on schools for now. much better than the retail work he wasn't loving :) so to celebrate, i went out an bought myself a new coat! okay--not really to celebrate, but i never buy myself new clothes and it was super cute! mine is just white with black, blue and red kind of pattern stripes on it. i will never be able to wear it in savannah because it was 81 degrees today and will be in the upper 70s until xmas, but i will wear it on my trip home to boston so lee doesn't have to meet me with parka in hand...

anyway...

it's good to have good news to post.

also, last weekend, jessica and i went to charleston, sc. it was beautiful and way more interesting than savannah. the downtown is just bigger and far more developed. we had some fantastic food at a restaurant called alluette's cafe. alluette herself came out of the kitchen to talk to us and what she serves is "holistic soul" food. and she welcomes vegans and vegetarians alike and will make something special for you that's not specified on the menu. also, she has a relationship with a local organic farm and the vegetables she has everyday is what she gets from him. so if it ain't in season, she don't got it... the place was fantastic!

if you go to charleston, please eat here and support good local business :) jessica and i will be going back.

thanks to all you great thinkers :)

lee starts a new job on monday. more on that later!

please send any extra good thoughts our way!

well, lee has been technically unemployed for about two weeks, but things are drying up out there. nothing but bad news today unfortunately. luckily, he's had three interviews and i'm trying to keep my chin up about that! if something doesn't work out soon, i may be back in boston even before i thought. there's nothing in savannah for lee--there are far more options in boston, even if it's only trader joe's. and two pricey rents right now aren't really in the budget...

so any happiness, well-wishes, and whatnot are quite welcome right now. thanks for thinking of us.

who knew? i like green bean casserole :)

mmm...and it was good! i had a great thanksgiving dinner with my friend jessica and her family. the menu consisted of:

turkey & gravy for the meat eaters
gruyere stuffed quorn cutlets for jessica and i
grean bean casserole
brussels sprouts with olive oil & parmesan
rosemary & garlic mashed potatoes
sweet potato gnocchi with herbed butter white wine sauce & pine nuts
stuffing (both in-turkey & out-of-turkey kinds!)
rolls
"waldorf salad" (cranberries & almonds instead of raisins & walnuts)
pumpkin pie
dutch apple pie
chocolate pie

it was all soooo good! here's a picture of the turkey carnage. i brought some home for lee since he missed his thanksgiving dinner while sitting on the train. don't worry--he had a great turkey and stuffing omelette over the weekend to make up for it :)

then lee promptly arrived on friday morning! we went to clary's for a good diner breakfast. he enjoyed greatly the georgia pecan pancakes with georgia cane syrup. we had a lot of fun just tooling around town. the highlight might have been going into st. john the baptist cathedral. i had never been inside but heard it had great stained glass windows. well, the place is beautiful and has more than fantastic stained glass windows!

we also checked out colonial cemetary and tasted wonderful local honey at the honey house. lee wanted to catch a glimpse of paula deen's restaurant, too. well, i obliged--but then he had to buy me a cupcake from the cupcake emporium! lee also got his fill of sweet tea. i don't like it, but lee has a sweet tooth, as you all know, so he just kept getting it in little cafes!

because lee missed a proper thanksgiving dinner, i took him to the olde pink house. it's a pretty fancy southern food fine dining experience. we started with deep fried brie in a red pepper remoulade with fruit. this was folled by some lovely entrees. lee had bourbon molasses braised pork, sweet potatoes with pecans and vanilla butter and collard greens (also southern style with plenty of pork). i had barbecued grouper, creamy grits and spinach. add to this a side of cornbread fried oysters and you have a feast! then after dinner, we joined my friend jessica and her family for a haunted pub crawl. yes, this is the second time i've done this, but it was fun :)

do you see the reddish orb below the lights? yeah, squint--it's there! the guide told us that if we catch orbs on our cameras, they are spirits. reddish ones are "negative" spirits. um, that means angry, right? whatever--the orbs generally show up around flood lights :) it's a hokey little tour, but a lot of fun. here's our guide and a picture of jessica, her brother travis, and scott being "interested" in the photos of orbs that the guide was passing around. i think scott is showing just a bit of skepticism!

the next day, we did some gallery hopping throughout savannah. it was fun, and there were some places with some nice artwork. it makes you sad when you can't buy anything nice though. we also stopped by the telfair art museum. this is the oldest museum in the south, and they have a new building for more contemporary art called the jepson center. well, this is where the love hate relationship between the town and scad comes into play. i asked if scad employees got any type of discount--the jepson was built by famous architect moshe safdie in 2006 and lee was hoping we could get inside--and the woman said real southern snotty-like, "well no, but i'd encourage you to become a member." sigh... so we went back to the telfair and took some goofy pictures instead.

lee also got some nice southern style seafood--fried oysters and shrimp. later that night, there were fireworks and the parade of boats. this is an annual event where people don their boats in christmas lights and they go up and down the river and show them off. it was kind of nice, but it was pouring rain by this time, so we got pretty soaked. here's a close-up of one of the boats.

all in all, a nice weekend. it's a shame that he couldn't stay longer though and i was sad when he left. but in four weeks, i'm heading up to boston for new year's. so until then, a nice picture of the two of us :)

lee's midnight train to georgia

my dear lee is on a train all day today and missing the holiday because he couldn't leave yesterday. he'll be here tomorrow morning. i am heading over to jessica's house to have thanksgiving with her, her fiance scott, and her brother and parents from south dakota. it should be a good time! i'm looking forward to the sweet potato gnocchi i made, the green bean casserole (i've never had it), the chocolate pie--which is a shaykett family tradition, and scott's mother's famously-bad-for-you family stuffing :)

happy thanksgiving everyone!

when it rains, it pours :-(

okay y'all. i'm listing here everything that's gone wrong (seriously and not so seriously) since i've come to savannah in an effort to make myself laugh. because right now, not much is going right and i'm just trying to muster a smile and a reason to get out of bed...

1. when i arrived, my apartment was not even remotely ready. not cleaned, no appliances installed, closet doors broken, floorboards missing, um--i think you get the point. unfortunately, some things are still not done and the property management company is not that great to deal with.

2. when i went to orientation for my job, too many alarm bells and red flags materialized in my head. i didn't listen to them. for example, there is no faculty staff directory. when a new hire in admissions asked about this, she was told, "well, just use the contacts you have." um, we're new. we don't have contacts. "well, just call anyone, they'll direct you." okay--is there a list anywhere at least of titles and phone numbers or extensions? "no." how do i contact people? "okay, just ask a coworker and see if they'll share their contacts." okay, how do i make my own contacts? "well, you'll just have to call people and get directed to the right person and see if they'll share their contact information with you." REALLY? this is a true interaction, though some exchanges may not be completely accurate after this 9-week distance.

3. by the end of my first week, i found out that everyone in the library hates the president of the college.

4. by the end of the second week, i found out that the library is gossip-central.

5. i am being watched by the library "spy." she has aggressively hounded me on facebook, delves too much into my private life, and is the caricature of what a southern girl is. we do not speak the same language, she is prejudiced--she will not help learning-disabled students (an art school, right? we have lots of kids with "learning disabilities!" that might be why they are visual learners!) and she thinks the rebel or confederate flag "don't mean a thang." she is also a self-described red neck when she drinks. and she tells the dean everything when she goes out for drinks with her... not professional...

6. i then fell victim to the office tattle tale. um, there was nothing to tattle, but it caused a big stir. i did not get in trouble, because it was nothing to tattle, but it was unsettling nonetheless.

7. i had to hound them to get my benefits. no one would contact me after my 30-day probation and if you don't sign up for them at that time, you are not eligible until open enrollment which is next october.

8. the "spousal relocation assistance" that was part of my offer was abandoned. we have been given no assistance, no local contacts, nothing. in fact, my recruiter ignores me when i contact him with any questions. i have not heard from him since the day i moved to savannah. i have contacted him three times.

9. i work in what my friend and coworker jessica--also new, from seattle--describes as the "bitter barn." that's where all of our colleagues work because they hate the place so much but won't do anything about it except complain and complain and complain. oh, and tell you not to do anything about it because all you can do is complain because nothing will change.

10. i became the most hated person in the library because i was sent to a conference in sarasota. then i found out that no one has been sent away for a conference in years. they wanted to know what "the new girl" did to get this honor.

11. we decided that there was no way my husband could move here--high unemployment, and hey, you can see, savannah isn't going so well! then, my husband lost his job. he is our primary income and we now have two very pricey rents to pay. this is not good.

12. my colleague, jenna, who i described as fantastic not that long ago, has informed me that she will not back me up on anything because she is too bitter and nothing will change. so i have no departmental support. period. it's just the two of us, so that's not very productive.

13. i'm trying desparately to work on the new donation policy because of the moldy book situation described below. i am in charge of all donations, so i would like this not to happen again. this may or may not happen. oh, and my colleague jenna will also not support me on this.

14. jenna just yesterday proved to me that she is just like everyone else i work with (except jessica who is also new and confused by this library). she basically sat me down and said that now that we've finished the quarter, i need to work on my own instruction materials for next quarter. okay--so this is a collaboration right? i mean, WE TEACH THE SAME CLASSES! she said no and then proceded to tell me why the last person in my position annoyed her--because she expected to develop materials for classes together and share them because WE TEACH THE SAME CLASSES. jenna then informed me that i have no access to her handouts or outlines for classes because they are hers. i am to do my own. these classes are called STANDARD bibliograpic instructions. the idea is that each class gets the SAME instruction so they get the SAME library literacy skills. generally, departments work on making COLLABORATIVE materials so that anyone can step in at any time and teach any class without fail. apparently, that is not the goal where i work. the goal is to make your own stuff, protect it like a rabid dog, and make sure that no one can sub for anyone so that you maintain your vitality to the library. weird.

15. jessica then told me that the office tattle tale came and asked her for coffee and then specifically told her to stay away from the reference department. "they" (um, me?) are apparently not good people to know. jessica is my friend and very miffed by this library. she is having similar problems here, but was confused what i might have done in 9 weeks to now really be on the gossip/tattle tale train.

16. i went to go pick up my new glasses today after going for 24 hours without being able to see much and they were wrong. i could see out of one eye and not out of the other at all. after i almost threw up and did walk right into a door and then realized i had no depth perception when i tried to grab a pencil, i took them back. they may or may not be ready by the holidays, so i may have to go for more than a week without glasses. i have never been able to afford a back-up pair, so this is also no good.

17. i found out that the college i work for is a family business. it was founded in the 1970s by a couple and their daughter (now the president). the daughter would have been in her 20s, i think. she has then gone on to make her children top positions at the savannah campus and another daughter and her husband run the new atlanta campus. i have also heard that the vice-presidents are family friends. many have been on board since the college was founded, i believe, which means that also some one them would have been in their 20s when they got the job. so this college is being run by a bunch of people who started here young and this has been their only job! no wonder there's all this crap that goes on! family businesses are normally a good thing, but i'm not sure about that in higher education.

18. i have a bloody nose everyday. i'm convinced it's from breathing in the air and chemicals spewed by the paper mills. it makes me gag outside, and yes, that smell even gets trapped in my office at work, so i have to smell it all day inside too.

19. each utility i have set up has gotten something wrong. my electric company decided it could make up an address for me and my internet provider just decided that it didn't have to listen to the actual service i wanted and so just gave me what they wanted to so my bill was three times as much as i thought i would be paying. i'm beginning to think that people down here can't understand my "accent."

20. i have been called a yankee--several times. unlike up north, this is actually akin to a racial slur down here and it means they hate you.

21. an old woman at a bus stop yelled "scad!" at me and then spit on me as i rode by on my bike. not everyone likes the students here, and i guess i look like i don't belong here so she mistook me for a student. the bad thing is that i work there, so she would have spit on my anyway!

22. my 60-something neighbor was hitting on me, pretty blatantly. i was pretty friendly when i first met him because i don't live in a safe neighborhood. it's the kind of place where you want your neighbors to know who you are. but then he started saying things like:
"you a librarian? that's not possible. you too sexy to be a librarian!"
"it's a good thing your husband isn't here. he'd know how sexy the neighbors think you are."
"can you do a favor for me? you see, i'm looking for a book--the kama sutra."
"you seem like a nice girl. i'm your friend. i'd like to share some wine and cheese with you. if i came and knocked on your door, would you share some wine and cheese with me?"

i now avoid him at all costs--i pretend i'm on the phone when i walk by or i just don't stop my bike. i think he's getting the hint because he asked me if i'm avoiding him. um, yes!

this might be it for now, but i'm wondering when this will end. i am laughing a bit now at some of these, so thanks...

last night of the quarter...woo hoo!

tonight is my last night to work for 5 whole weeks! yay! there will be no students there, so i'm not really sure why we're open, but it's still my last one.

in other news, the head of reference position has been open since july. they have since offered the job to two people and both of those people turned it down. what did they know about the place that i didn't know? what makes this even more difficult is that they only interview one person at a time for the job, they then offer it to that person, and then what? they have to start all over again. so it looks like it will just be me and jenna for a while--reference duo extraordinaire...

hazmat team...grrr...

that was me on friday. yes, the library hazmat team. don't worry, no anthrax or scary shit, just mold. and by the way, to librarians, mold is scary shit! this box of donations had been sitting in the reference office for WEEKS. there are no donation policies or procedures currently in place. basically, someone comes in with boxed (or not) items and says that they want to donate them to the library and the people at the circulation desk take them. they do not look at them, they do not count them, they do not determine if it is even items we would ever need in the collection. this is not how it works at most libraries... so we end up taking items that we don't need and will never need, such as records (there is no record player in the library), VHS (this format is no longer supported on campus), and books on how to cook chicken (there is no culinary art program and students do not check cookbooks out of the library for pleasure).

so i opened up four lovely boxes of children's religious books, trade paperback fiction from about the 1970s, and other stuff that we don't need in the library and unpacked them onto my desk for counting and sorting. that's when i discovered ACTIVE MOLD!!! argh!!!

active mold infects books around it because the spores just need to attach to another book to cause mold there. it's also a health hazard. so, i had to put on the gloves, the respirator, pack the books back up and then basically bomb my office with mold and mildew killer. luckily, the boss decided that we don't need to keep these books, so they've been put away for pick-up and destruction. so please, never donate moldy, water damaged books to your library. people like me get very angry when they have to replay that scene out of E.T. and then sit in a chemically-smelling office for the rest of their day.

thanks for listening to this public service announcement.

pretty pink in sarasota

for most of last week, i was in sunny sarasota, florida for the annual meeting of the art librarians society southeast regional chapter. this year, it was a joint venture between the ringling museum of art and the ringling college of art and design. yes, this is the mr. ringling that you think of when you think of the circus. his name was john. um, he was a true turn-of-the-century businessman and he had money from the circus, from real estate, from oil ventures--you name it. but he was also a patron of the arts and, along with his wife mabel, they built a big ass mansion down on some swamp land, relocated the headquarters of the circus, and started a museum and a museum school. that school is now rcad, mentioned above, and is no longer affiliated with the museum. but here is john and mabel's venitian-inspired mansion, ca d'zan, which just came through a huge renovation and preservation project. we got a private tour of the mansion and also of the museum's new special exhibition of egyptian artifacts. john and mabel collected european masters, of course, but now the museum (in another building) has added a brand new wing to handle traveling exhibitions.

not part of the same complex, but next door is charles ringling's mansion. this is the brother of circus fame. his house is now a part of the new college of florida and this building has classrooms in it!

but i can't imagine classes with a view like this...

we also got tours of the brand new library at the museum, tours of the ringling college of art's campus, had great sessions on art law, and had wonderful chances to network and meet other art library professionals in the region. it was a good conference, but exhausting to be gone for almost 4 days. but, i also had fantastic ethnic food! i miss that in savannah. i had lovely peruvian and spanish food. and for all the old fogeys in sarasota, they sure like to have a good time. the town is quite lively and i would go back--just for the museum and the food alone. speaking of, check out this m&m gelato :)

but for me, the real highlight of the trip was a visit to the circus museum, at the same complex as the ringling mansion and museum of art. wow, what childhood memories of going to the ringling bros. & barnum & bailey circus! my favorite thing in the museum was this cannon--and check out the picture of the people being shot out of it!

wow!

and now lee lost his job...

what is happening in my life? i hate my new job and where i ended up and now my husband has lost his job. it costs too much money to move him to somewhere we hate living, so he'll be looking for a subletter for half of the place in boston. plus, there are hundreds of firms up there and 9 in savannah. good news is, he still has his teaching job at wentworth, so he's not penniless, just almost...

i'm at a conference in sarasota, florida right now and i got the news on a break in the program. i'll have to post more details later. this is just frustrating that now i'm the one that's employed when all i can figure is that it was a giant mistake to move here.

i need a movie break

has anyone seen "taxi to the dark side?" it's a documentary about the treatment of prisoners in afganistan, iraq, and guantanamo bay. i shouldn't have watched it after watching a sad wwii movie. it makes you think twice about what kind of person makes a war criminal...

lions and tigers and vampire librarians?

oh my...

yeah, my costume wasn't the best because i didn't really have the money, the car, or the time to plan a good one. so i went as a vampire librarian because they have been featured in some books recently, most notably, the historian by elizabeth kostova. it's a fun book and i recommend it to anyone, but must warn you all to not be turned off by it's 600-some page length. i promise it's an entertaining read!

but the party started at 7:30ish at a friend of jenna's. i went with her and we drank and ate in the courtyard of this apartment. i knew a couple of people from jenna's birthday party and the other new girl from work, jessica, and her fiance, scott, were there. jessica was wooed by scad to be our new cataloguer and got all the same lies i got about finding her spouse a job and this being a great cheap city with lots to do. she's great and we've bonded a lot. she's someone who would be my friend in any other city as well. we've just decided that it's sad we've met under these conditions when we feel like we are not in a place we want to be...

anyway, then the party moved along to the downtown bars. i have never lived anywhere where EVERYONE dresses in trashy, slutty costumes. i didn't have that great of a time once we went downtown because there are only about 10 bars and they had to accommodate everyone who was out. the streets were also covered in puke and because drinking on the street is legal, everyone had brown paper bags with bottles or plastic traveler cups. i'm too old for that much puke on the street...

free movies

so, i had two full film fest days. on friday, i saw the two student showcases--these were about 6 short films each all done by students, some scad, some from other schools. i hate to say it, but the ones from other schools were way better. not like the scad students had much of a chance. the other schools were the american film institute, nyu, columbia--you see, the schools that really train some of the best filmmakers...

anyway, that being said, there were some awesome student films. there were also some bombs, like some strange one named "licious" that showed a girl running in forsyth park, sitting in a house with a crazy grandmother, and also included a man dressed in a wolf costume. little red riding hood, right? well, the pieces were there but the movie made NO sense. and i watch tons of obscure and strange movies. just ask my husband!

i also saw three feature films--kabluey, o'horten, and the boy in the striped pajamas. kabluey was really funny and if you have the chance to rent it, you should. it's about a guy who goes to live with his sister-in-law when his brother is deployed to iraq with the national guard. o'horten was sometimes funny, but very slow-paced. it was about a man who retired from being a train engineer in norway at the age of 67 and has no idea what to do with his life once he doesn't have a timetable to determine what he does and where he goes. finally, the boy in the striped pajamas was just absolutely the saddest movie i've ever seen. it's about an unlikely friendship between a commandant's son and a jewish boy at a concentration camp in wwii. i can't write more than that because it's just that sad. it's totally worth seeing, just be prepared that there is no happy or even uplifting ending.

i can play psycho dice!

for those of you who don't know what psycho dice is, it is a game that jim williams, the main character in "midnight in the garden of good and evil" made up. now i reference this book/movie because it takes place in savannah, so this makes it feel more relevant to me--psycho dice, i mean. now jim williams believed that he could use his mind to directly influence events in his life. he used the game psycho dice to illustrate this. he would concentrate really hard on what number he thought he would throw on a die, and then he would toss it. basically, he did a bunch of statistics to prove that he was right (and of course it was a bunch of bull), but nonetheless, he felt it to be true.

so here is my psycho dice story, a story that maybe my mental powers influenced the ending of!

it was a dark and stormy night... JUST KIDDING!

anyway...

a couple weeks into my job, i found out that the reference department processes donated materials to the library. this is weird. that is normally something reserved for the acquisitions and cataloguing departments. but what made this even weirder and a whole lot more upsetting is that i was told that along with processing the donations, we were to provide valuations or appraisals of the materials.

for those of you not in library-land, or who do not work in non-profits, this is strictly illegal. according to irs document 561 (i'm a librarian, of course i looked it up!), an individual is PROHIBITED from assigning a dollar value to donated goods if they are either the donor OR THE DONEE. that would be the library. specifically, a library is considered an "interested party" by the irs. it is the responsibility of the donor to have any materials appraised by a professional before they donate them.

i was upset.

i contacted other fellow librarians and my previous place of employment. i knew that i was exempt from any legal fallout because i would merely be following orders. but i still wasn't comfortable with this. by the way--the library knew this practice was illegal. um, there is no academic library in the u.s. that would provide an appraisal (sorry, they called it a "valuation" and said that it wasn't the same thing. a good copy of roget's proved otherwise!).

i was stressed. i wasn't sleeping. jenna, my co-worker basically told me i would be fired if i didn't do it because that was one of the main reasons the previous head of the department was fired.

but ultimately, i decided i wouldn't do it because doing things that i know to be wrong bothers me that much. so i couldn't stop perseverating over this issue and played scenarios over and over and over in my head. jenna said she really liked working with me...

then the day came. the day when we had no more classes to teach. the day we needed to start processing the massive pile of donations sitting in our office.

and that's when i saw the email "scad libraries will no longer provide valuations for donated materials." i'm sure i caused this to happen... ;)

i promise i will only use my powers for good. well, unless there's some stupid presidential candidate or blond southern landlord b**ch who needs a good whollop (yikes, sorry, that snuck in there. yeah, i'm having problems with my landlord still who still thinks i'm an uptight northerner). but otherwise, i will use my powers for good.

because you asked...

someone asked me to describe my shoes. here's some pictures instead :)

and the other pair:

and here's sid playing with the camera case while i took the pictures. isn't he cute?

new shoes and free movies

sounds like a good week to me!

i ordered myself some new shoes, which were badly needed, and they arrived on thursday. i heart dsw--but there isn't one within hours of savannah :( so i ordered online and got $20 off and free shipping. another reason to cheer!

then, this week started the savannah film festival. it is sponsored by scad and employees get free tickets. i requested six and today was my first film day. it was a short entitled "she says she loves me" followed by a feature-length film called "your name here." the short was obscure, but attractive to watch. it was a french film and had great street scenes of what could be paris or another big city there. the feature was annoying though and i ended up leaving early to go get some breakfast before i had to head to work. but i'm still glad i went, and i have 5 more tickets this week--3 on friday and 2 on saturday. it keeps me busy, at least...

for harry potter fans

okay, this is something cool in savannah. some scad students started a quidditch team and they play in forsyth park--near my place. that's where the fountain by my name is located :) check it out: Quidditch takes flight in Forsyth!

i'm hanging in there, working the night shift a little too often for my tastes, but oh well. i wouldn't worry about it if i felt it was safe to bike home at night. don't worry friends. i do enough worrying for all of us. but, i bike with a girl from work to a point that is four blocks away from both of our places--right in the middle. so i only have to bike four blocks FAST and then haul my bike up the stairs and in the door in about two seconds. there are only two more weeks that i have to work two nights/week, one week where i work one night, and two sundays left (the next two, actually). and when i work sundays, i don't get out as late. it's 8pm instead of 9pm. and yes, in savannah-land, that one hour makes a huge difference between kids playing in the street or not.

this weekend starts the savannah film festival, and i have a ticket for a 9:30am movie on sunday before my shift. the theatre is right across the street from where i work. so i'll have to keep you all posted on that. and there might be a halloween party this weekend too. i hope so!

bye, y'all!

meme?

so, beth has tagged me for a meme. that means i have to answer some questions and pass them on. sorry guys--i'm totally new to blogging and i only know beth and trinity on blogger, so i guess this stops with me!

4 jobs i've had:

1. sorter in a factory--yes, it's true, and being from ohio factory work isn't all that uncommon. i worked for konica, in a photo finishing factory. i got to smell nasty chemicals and work the overnight shift. you see, when you used to take your film for overnight developing, it went somewhere like this. so i worked from 5:30pm until about 4am, or until the sorting was done. i was the front line of the factory. the film came in and i sorted it into the correct bins: 3" singles, 3" doubles, 4" singles, 4" doubles... i think you got it...

2. chef's assistant at a sorority house--this was one of my jobs in college. i worked for AGD (alpha gamma delta) and made all their dinner dreams come true. these girls had a chef and then me, who assisted the chef, put all the dishes out on the buffet, set the tables, and then cleaned up after them. in general, the girls were snots but i got paid $11/hour and got to eat dinner with them for free.

3. esl teacher--i did this in college when i lived abroad, and then again for my first job out of college. it was fun to teach english to people who wanted to learn and i had a great time and in general great students. unfortunately, it's pretty seasonal work and paid less than my chef's assistant job mentioned above!

4. librarian--my current profession and one that i love dearly. i used to work at a 200-year-old library and art gallery, and now i work at the savannah college of art and design. i help people do research and find the resources they need. it's fun. i do little treasure hunts everyday.

4 movies I can watch over and over:

1. edward scissorhands
2. beetlejuice
3. the goonies
4. the princess bride

4 places i have lived:

1. syracuse, new york
2. budapest, hungary
3. boulder, colorado
4. boston, ma
(and actually a couple more!)

4 tv shows i love:

i don't really watch television, but when i do i guess here's what i like...

1. scrubs
2. paula's party
3. mythbusters
4. how i met your mother

4 places i've vacationed:

ooh! i love vacations!

1. japan: tokyo, kyoto, himeji, hiroshima, miyajima, and hida-takayama all in three weeks this past summer.
2. the big island of hawaii
3. trekking down the coast of turkey with a tag-on to athens, greece
4. a mostly cross-country trip, from syracuse, ny to denver, co and backand forth again; with stops in: lexington, charlottesville & natural bridge, va; knoxville, nashville & memphis, tn; oxford & jackson, ms; new orleans, la; galveston, san antonio, del rio, big bend national park, & el paso, tx; las crucas, santa fe & taos, nm; denver & boulder, co; kansas city & st. louis, mo; chicago, il; and kearney, ne. whew!

4 of my favorite dishes:

1. butternut squash lasagna--a thanksgiving favorite in our house
2. momos--one of my favorite things to get at tibetan restaurants. they are little dumplings filled with spicy cabbage, potatoes, onions, and meat if you eat that.
3. grilled or wood fired pizza--grilled if it's at home, wood fired if i'm eating out
4. my husband's crepes :)

4 sites i visit daily:

1. nytimes.com--my link with what's happening in the world
2. boston.com--because i like to get the news where my husband and friends are living, and because i'm homesick...
3. kevin.spleck.net/smack_the_penguin/--smack the penguin is an addictive and fun game!
4. maybe facebook--to check up on my friends

4 places i would rather be right now:

any place but savannah, but i'll try to be reasonable...

1. boston, ma
2. cambridge, ma
3. somerville, ma
4. brookline, ma

okay, those weren't really 4 distinct places at all, but i tried...

5 people i'm tagging:

again, i don't really have anyone to tag. suggestions are welcome...

haunted pub crawl

so last night, i went on a haunted pub crawl. it was super fun! it was for jenna's birthday. for those of you who don't know, jenna is my co-reference librarian. there are only the two of us currently in the department. if it were not for her, i would already be back in boston now. so that's a good and a bad thing--i would be unemployed if i were in boston, but i would be decidedly happier. no really, jenna is an awesome person and i'm really glad i'm getting to work with her. she's a great fellow librarian and she's been just super welcoming and helpful in savannah. that's her on the left.

so we all met at moon river brewing company for dinner and drinks and then left for molly macpherson's, where the tour started. the cool thing about savannah is that there is no open container law. so when you show up for the tour, they take your payment and tell you to go inside to get yourself a drink. you go to four bars on the tour and they stop and give you time to get a drink at every one. you just go up to the bar and tell them you want your beer to go, or you can also request a traveler. the only rule for drinking in savannah is that it has to be in a plastic cup. that's it! but savannahians being what they are--uptight, rich, southern folk--they have special words to make drinking sound better. to be "in your cups" means your drunk and when you have the "savannah flu" you are hung over.

here was our tour guide--a fun scad screenwriting student that we see in the library pretty often. his name was jeremy and he's here with stephanie from the circulation desk:

how i live...

well, i've said it before, and i'll say it again--this is my year of dharma. at least that's what an old co-worker told me!

but anyway, it's not too bad. i mean, my bedroom and my kitchen are fully functional. same with the bathroom. i just don't have any furniture in the living room to speak of and i have two other empty bedrooms. i'm using one of them for a "yoga room." well, i would, if i had done any yoga yet!

internet...finally!

today is a good day. i have my own internet connection! yay! now i can post pictures of things as i take them. so stay tuned, because tonight i'm going on a haunted pub crawl :)

carrie mae weems

so, carrie mae weems--who by the way is totally awesome--taught at the SCAD atlanta branch this past winter quarter. she came here to savannah the week of my birthday and did a lecture that i missed because it was the one night of the week that i had to work :( but, her show opened on my birthday in the gallery that shares a building with the library. so i went over right after work on friday.

first--when i went to syracuse, we still had alcohol at art openings. not a lot, but still there was wine. here there was a choice of water or sweet tea! funny! also crab cake hors d'euvres and some gross little chocolate petit fours. but this is all beside the point.

the exhibit is only okay. this is not the carrie mae weems that i truly enjoy. it was a project she did with her class, their take on human rights around the world. for example, a photo entitled something like "ms. bhutto" with a girl dressed in a white salwar kameez with a headscarf and big sunglasses sitting on the back of a convertible car and waving. not very moving to me. so basically, the show was photographs of the students staging poses of "human rights" moments and her photographing them on an unchanging studio backdrop with a clock in the background. just not really moving, i don't think. some of them were really good, but on the whole i was disappointed. sad...

anyway, if anyone is interested, check out the SCAD press release here: http://www.scad.edu/news/2008/carrie-mae-weems.cfm

boston or bust!

alright everyone, this is it... i've officially decided that my husband is not indeed moving to savannah. the economy doesn't really seem to offer a lot here right now--um, this is NOT a white collar town... but also, i'm not really diggin' the south, nor do i think that my job encourages me to be here very long. it's enough to say that i've come to work at a very gossip-friendly, tattle-tale, place. no one has been here much longer than two years, and several people have already told me they're looking for new jobs... sigh... that's okay. savannah isn't home anyway.

so... lee will be here for thanksgiving, and i think i'll head to boston for the new year's holiday. the trick is to make sure that i'll actually come back. and honestly, i'll have to really convince myself that i need to be here for a year to make it all look good on my resume. so i'll keep you all posted on travel developments, but i really want to be in new england for part of the winter.

birthday blues

well, it wasn't that blue, but it wasn't that exciting either. some folks at work took me out to lunch, which was great and very nice of them. and my coworker bought me some great local tea and local honey. the tea is fantastic--it's white persian melon from the savannah tea room. tea is big here! there are tea houses all over town. and i did also indulge in some local cupcakes. a place called the cupcake emporium wooed me with a brownie cupcake, and then later with a reese's peanut butter one. yum! it was also nice to hear from friends from far away--sigh!

palmetto bugs?

that's just a cute way of saying cockroach, you can't fool me! especially when they are three inches long and in my house! argh! okay, i will calm down--i'm trying to get used to it here, but they are gross and big. and in the north, cockroach says "dirty." down here, they're just a fact of life. they are everywhere, clean, dirty, old, new, whatever.

anyway...

this weekend, a good ol' friend from my budapest days came down from atlanta and we checked out the islands. she took me to the crab shack on tybee island--a totally touristy little joint but with phenomenal seafood :) oh, and a gator pond as you walk in from the parking lot. check it out at http://www.thecrabshack.com/ for super cheesy photos and all the happenings. if any of y'all who read this venture down to savannah, i'll take you there. then we did oktoberfest, but i have to admit i was super disappointed. it looks like savannah's oktoberfest is more kid-oriented. there wasn't even a biergarten and the little bit of beer that was there was overpriced and not worth drinking--miller anyone? oh, sorry--there was also blue moon, but again, not for $5!!! here's me and amy down by the river for the 'fest. you can tell she's lived in the south for too long because it was about 85 degrees and she was wearing a scarf!

this coming weekend is my birthday, so i'll let you know if i do anything exciting. i'm thinking about treating myself to a little bit of "midnight in the garden of good and evil" and going to the mercer-williams house. oh, and there will be cupcakes--though i probably won't be making them for myself. but a little jaunt over to the cupcake emporium will solve my problem anyway.

and did i mention?

they don't recycle here. it's so disheartening to throw everything away every day... but anyways...

on october 9, i heard that carrie mae weems is speaking for free. so that's a big perk of working where i do. also, the savannah film festival, which is sponsored by scad starts on october 25 and i think i'm going to try to volunteer for it. there are a couple of other things that i really want to go to but have no one to go with and no way of getting home after dark. sigh... these first couple of months here will be hard.

however, last night i made friends! i work with a guy who also went to simmons and graduated three years ago. he's the head of circulation. one of his co-workers is also new here to scad and she is very nice and invited us both to go to the savannah jazz fest. it was fun and nina simone's daughter performed. she was spectacular! i also had the best garlic shrimp i think i've ever tasted. then, unfortunately, i drank too much and woke up with a headache this morning. that's what happens when you go out when you've been sequestered in your house for too long, i guess.

this is the theatre where the film fest will be and where the major speakers do their thing. and it is right across the street from where i work. i'll be sure when to let you all know when i see fantastic things there :)

i'm trying not to miss boston and my friends and husband too much. sometimes i think that it's good that everyone at work is so friendly, but then again, if they weren't i'd be back in boston already! one day at a time now, guys, one day at a time... one thing is for sure though--we're not in kansas anymore, toto!

Saturday, September 27, 2008

um...

what have i gotten myself into? i'm not sure. luckily the job is good, because savannah ain't! i don't like it at all. i don't like my neighborhood, i don't really feel safe here, and i seem to be the only yank around. oh, and my apartment has been a disaster anyway--it basically wasn't really finished the day i moved in and that has been a trial trying to get the property management company to do anything about it. instead, they told me that this is why they don't normally rent to people out of town because the place would have been rented as it was. my appliances weren't hooked up or installed properly, the place had an inch of construction grime all over the place, and things have just not been finished--like the tub being caulked in, the fireplace being finished, and i don't have a city trash can and didn't have a mailbox until yesterday. this place is infuriating...

i really miss boston and my friends and city life. i'm giving this a try and we'll see what happens. but right now, i'm thinking of those crisp fall-ish mornings that are happening up in new england and i don't want to be here. sigh...

9 1/2 weeks...

that's how long it will be from the time i move until i see my husband again! sad... even sadder, i used to live alone, but now haven't for about 6 years and it's crazy how that messes with you and makes you feel incapable! i guess sid and i will have all the time we need to hang out and play again. sid is my cat, and he was my companion when i lived alone before, but he's really quite taken with lee. it sometimes feels like sid has traded me for lee. they are play buddies and sid obviously doesn't realize this hurts my feelings :( he's a cat--what kind of loyalty can i expect?!?

all new--with a capital "n"

well, i'm starting a blog. this is something i said i'd never do. but you see, i'm moving to savannah, georgia, after only two years in boston--and this wasn't really in the plans. so i'm hoping to record my new life and keep in touch with my old friends here. we'll see how this goes!

i leave boston in one week and one day! i start my new job at the savannah college of art & design on september 22. this has happened so fast! but for now, i'm hoping to enjoy the rest of my time here--well, and i really do need to minimize that pesky stress that has crept into my life these past two weeks... but pretty soon, this will all be over and i'll be settling into my new life as a southern belle. ha!
